My Experience working with Dr. V.K.Ravindran(Founder of PSI Data Systems)

I started my career, as software Engineer trainee in Process Systems India (PSI) in early 1980. I had a single course on Fortran language in my M.Sc.(Tech) Applied Electronics). I learnt everything about computers, programming on the job at PSI. When I joined PSI, there were less than 30 people working on 24, Richmond Road Bangalore). Majority of the persons who were working at PSI were either from IIT or IISC. The founders of PSI Dr. V.K.Ravindran and Vinay Deshpande had studies in Stanford and had returned to start their own company in India. We used to work in assembly language, on systems which had less than 64KB memory had black and white display.

My first project was to work on developing an operating system similar to DOS. It was great fun to understand how operating system controls everything. Developing an home grown operating system was challenging. There were occasions, when we skipped going home and worked for 36 hours non-stop. Getting our product used by companies such as TISCO, Nirlon, Asian Paints, Four S, Usha Martin, HMT, Citi Bank, Department of Defence pay office.

This blog is created to recollect the great work done by Dr. V.K.Ravindran (Founder of PSI and PSI Data Systems Pvt. Ltd). Dr. V.K.Ravindran and Vinay Deshpande, founded PSI which focused on developing solutions developed using state of art technologies.  Dr. V.K.Ravindran and Vinay Deshpande studied in the Stanford university. They took up challenging projects such as building CNC controllers, Signed contracts with companies in Japan for developing and supplying intelligent terminals for computer based terminals.

I request everyone to share their (Eureka/Yahoo) moments and the sweet memories of working with PSI. They can also share lessons learned by them while working at PSI.

I am grateful to PSI for it gave me an opportunity to learn computers. It also helped me make friends.  These friends have supported me in ups and downs in my life.

  1. My Mother enjoyed hosting international visitors. One of them was Ravi, at the start of his studies at Stanford University. He stayed in our home and later rented the apartment over the garage. We all grew to love him. He was not only brillant, but kind, amusing, and courageous. Thousands of miles away from home in a strange and sometimes hostile environment he thrived. He won many hearts, including his beautiful and talented future wife, also a Stanford student. We never visited Bangalore or PSI, but he occasionally brought his family back to visit our Mother. She loved his Children too.

I joined PSI at Bangalore as Sales Executive in 1982, immediately after MBA at Osmania University and it has been a memorable jouney which laid the foundation for my entire career, later, though topsy turvy, I got my first prospecting & selling lessons from Dinesh Puri, RM, South, in Computer hardware Sales and briliant coacing and mentoring by Ajai Nair , Area Mgr, at Hyderabad. 1. I recall that around end of 1980 my sales engineer had visited your office for supply of electric tube light fittings and ceiling fans. The Order was small, but my sales engineer came back impressed regarding the morale of the young group. Around same time HCL had opened an office at Church Street, and we had supplied the same items. Similar was the case with DCM Data Products. Wipro had started recruiting for Regional Managers for different zones at all India level. The surge of Indian Companies was the natural outcome of exit of IBM from India.
